ARTISANAL FILIGREE OBTAINS NEW SEAL OF WARRANTY

The municipalities of Gondomar and Póvoa de Lanhoso presented, on 12 July, at an event organised at Pousada do Porto, Hotel Palácio do Freixo, the certification programme of “Filigrana de Portugal”. This initiative is intended to present a new guarantee of quality to the consumer, promoting artisanal filigree in Portugal and worldwide.

The process, which begun to be shaped in March 2017, started with 21 units of artisanal production, which have already received the first certifications. The purpose is to reach many others, “doing an act of justice to the artisans who for many centuries preserve this technique, not giving up on having filigree recognised as a distinctive element of traditional jewellery”, said Avelino Silva, Maire of Póvoa de Lanhoso.

The new recognition of the characteristics of the artisanal and autonomous production supports the preservation of the work of Portuguese artisans. The certification was awarded by Aderecertifica, an organisation accredited by the Portuguese Institute of Accreditation, and meets all the requirements provided for by the National Certification System of the Traditional Artisanal Productions.

The specifications for the certification of filigree are intended to strengthen the relationship of trust with the consumers, allowing them to recognise, in a reliable and safer manner, the artisanal filigree in its various forms of expression – jewellery, clothing, decoration and other articles.

Fulfilling an old ambition of the two municipalities, the announcement of the initiative also precedes the official candidacy of filigree for the Intangible Heritage of Humanity status, as mentioned by the representatives, with the purpose of preserving an identity which has an immeasurable cultural value for the country.
